The word tattoo, or tattow in the 18th century, is a loanword from the Samoan word tatau, meaning to strike. The Oxford English Dictionary gives the etymology of tattoo as In 18th c. tattaow, tattow. From Polynesian (Samoan, Tahitian, Tongan, etc.) tatau.In Marquesan, tatu.Before the importation of the Polynesian word, the practice of tattooing had been described in the West as painting ...Artists. Famous artists are Norman Keith Collins, also known as Sailor Jerry, (1911–1973) is one of the most well known traditional tattoo artists.; Herbert Hoffmann (1919–2010), began tattooing in Germany during the 1930s. Together with fellow artists Karlmann Richter and Albert Cornelissen he was featured in the 2004 film Blue Skin (German Flammend Herz).
